Grants

The Center for Scholarly Technology (CST) periodically offers grants that support USC faculty members incorporating instructional technologies into their teaching. While the focus of these competitive grant programs and the types of awards vary, their common goals are to support innovation and to promote effective teaching strategies and technology solutions that can be shared with the USC academic community.

Future grants

Future grants will support the theme of faculty preparation for online teaching along a continuum of eLearning. The focus will be on faculty readiness and exploration of teaching with technology, including courses with a simple course website, “flipped” courses with significant online instruction and activities, and completely online academic offerings.

Competitive grant programs are announced on our Call for Proposals page. Eligible USC faculty members will receive email invitations to apply.

Previously funded programs and projects:

  • Course Continuity in a Crisis (C3) grants supported USC’s Emergency Preparedness strategy by focusing on the development of a “Plan B assignment” or other activity that would enable instruction to continue online in the event of a campus closure.
  • Learning Environments grants incentivized instructors who were teaching in newly renovated classrooms to explore ways in which the features of the space—including furniture and technology—could enhance learning. The grants focused on active learning strategies that engaged students with in-class presentations, multimedia, collaboration, feedback and reflection.
  • The Inverted Classroom Project, co-sponsored with the Center for Excellence in Teaching, awarded funds to experiment with “flipping” a portion of a course so that students used technology and online content to prepare in advance for active engagement in the classroom.

Effective online and classroom-based teaching strategies and useful applications of technology emerged from these grant projects and continue to offer models that instructors can try on their own or discuss with the CST team. For more information, please contact us at cst@usc.edu.
